FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol – a pretty popular method for sending website files between a computer system and a server. With an FTP program like FileZilla or CuteFTP, you can establish a connection to the server and view its content in one pane, while the files on your PC will be displayed in another pane within the main program window. All you have to do to send files or entire directories in either direction is to select them and then to drag them from one pane to the other. FTP is preferred by many users because you can set up different FTP accounts and each one can be restricted to access just one folder on the server, so a designer, for example, can fulfill their task without accessing any other directory in the web hosting account. In addition, the presence of different FTP accounts will also enable you to build multiple Internet sites using web design applications such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver and to upload them to their corresponding directories on the server.
